Lake Tahoe is a haven for outdoor activities, nightlife, and culture along the border between California and Nevada. At an elevation of 6,225 feet above sea level, Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America. In the United States, only the five Great Lakes have a larger volume. Lake Tahoe is also the second deepest lake in the United States.

The majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains surrounding Lake Tahoe feature exceptional resorts such as the Heavenly resort above South Lake Tahoe. The lakeshore communities also offer an impeccable array of upscale shopping, dining, and entertainment.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

The Shops at Heavenly Village is a stylish commercial complex in South Lake Tahoe featuring more than 40 shops and restaurants and many fun activities. Base Camp Pizza Company is a local favorite at Heavenly Village for gourmet pizza and pasta dishes. Base Camp also boasts 12 rotating craft beer taps plus regular live music nights.

The Heavenly Gondola takes sightseers on a scenic 2.4-mile ride above Lake Tahoe with stunning views over the lake and mountains. Heavenly Village also offers an ice skating rink, an eight-screen movie theater, and an award-winning live entertainment lounge, The Loft. The adjacent Village Center offers a fine selection of specialty retailers and art galleries. Marcus Ashley Fine Art Gallery is a standout here with oil paintings, glass art, sculptures, and prints from dozens of North American artists. 

On the opposite side of Lake Tahoe, Gar Woods Grill & Pier is a premier dining destination pairing eclectic Californian cuisine with an impressive regional wine list, including more than a dozen wines available by the glass. Gar Woods’ menu includes a range of decadent desserts and signature cocktails, such as the famous Wet Woody with rum, peach schnapps, and fruit juice. This romantic lakefront restaurant has a long pier and an outdoor deck, which teems with life throughout the summer and fall. In the winter, Gar Woods’ warm interior hosts après-ski sessions with live music.

Things to Do

The Lake Tahoe Concours D’Elegance is the foremost wooden boat show in North America. More than 85 of the finest wooden boats in the world take to Lake Tahoe’s clear waters each August for this prestigious event. Ta-Hoe Nalu is another premier event in early August that brings a tropical party atmosphere to Lake Tahoe’s northern shores. The main event of the Ta-Hoe Nalu is a series of paddleboard races on the lake. The event also features food and drinks vendors selling flavorful Hawaiian meals and shaved ice. 

Numerous resorts dot the Lake Tahoe shoreline, but only the Edgewood Tahoe Resort offers golfing right on the lakefront. Originally designed by George Fazio in 1968 then later revamped by his world-famous nephew Tom Fazio, the stunning Edgewood Tahoe golf course has been ranked by Golf Digest as one of the finest public courses in the world. Every summer, the Edgewood course attracts crowds of spectators for the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament. Golfers to have graced the Edgewood course include superstar professionals such as Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer and cross-sport stars such as the NBA’s Michael Jordan, MLB’s Rick Rhoden, and Mark Mulder, and NFL’s Billy Joe Tolliver and Tony Romo.

The Harveys Lake Tahoe Hotel and Casino is another grand lakefront resort known for its first-class entertainment. Harveys Summer Concert Series brings a packed lineup of outdoor performances from some of the biggest names in music.

Numerous school districts serve the communities along the shoreline of Lake Tahoe. South Lake Tahoe and other nearby neighborhoods are served by the Lake Tahoe Unified School District.
